106th Sharqat Day Celebration at The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre


Bengaluru, October 30. The 106th ‘Sharqat Day’ was commemorated by the troops of The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, Belagavi, on October 29, 2024. This annual event honors the valiant soldiers of the 114 Marhattas, now The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Mesopotamian Campaign of 1918. The 114 Marhattas carved an immortal legacy through their valor, courage, and indomitable spirit, for which the Battalion was awarded the distinguished Battle Honour “Sharqat.”

A solemn Wreath-Laying Ceremony was held at the Centre’s Sharqat War Memorial, where Brigadier Joydip Mukherjee, Commandant, The Maratha LIRC along with Veteran Officers and all ranks, paid homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. The tribute symbolized the enduring respect and remembrance for those who shaped the legacy of The Maratha Light Infantry with their courage.

A Special Sainik Sammelan was followed on the occasion, where the Sharqat Banner was presented to the Training Battalion, a testament to their outstanding dedication and performance.

A Barakhana was also organised on the event providing an opportunity to strengthen camaraderie and share experiences. This informal gathering served as a reminder of the strong bonds within the Regiment, united by shared pride in their heritage and an unwavering commitment to duty.
