Government Approves Signing of Extradition Treaty between India, Afghanistan

New Delhi. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the signing and ratification of the Extradition Treaty between India and Afghanistan, a Government press statement in this regard said September 12.

Extradition treaty define an offence as an extraditable offence if it is punishable under the laws in both the agreed (treaty signing countries/states) states by imprisonment for a period of at least one year.

The treaty, once signed, would provide a legal framework for seeking extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals from and to Afghanistan.

So far India has extradition treaties with at least 37 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea (RoK), Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkey, Tunisia, UK, US, Uzbekistan, UAE, Ukraine and Vietnam.
