Currently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief
of the Western Naval Command, the Indian Navy's
sword arm, Vice Admiral Joshi will be at the helm
of the Navy when it is on an ambitious modernization
programme with five ships/ submarines on order every
year for the next 10 years and the impending induction
of India’s own nuclear armed submarine INS Arihant as
also an indigenous aircraft carrier.
These assets are in addition to the nuclear propelled
INS Chakra which the Navy acquired this year and the
acquisition of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya due
for delivery Dec 4 from Russia.
As the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Joshi should have
a tenure of three years as he is just 58. He is the senior
most among the Indian Navy’s eligible Vice Admirals, seniority
being the sole criterion for appointment by the Government.
A Chief of Staff of the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force has a
minimum tenure of two years up to the age of 62, or a maximum
of three years if he is younger. Born 4 July 1954, Admiral Joshi
will retire at the age of 61 on 31 July 2015, the day of retirement
being the last day of the month of birth.
Vice Admiral Joshi was commissioned into the executive branch of
the Indian Navy 1 April 1974.
During his long and distinguished service spanning nearly four
decades, he served in different command, staff and instructional
appointments.
His sea command includes guided missile corvette INS Kuthar,
guided missile destroyer INS Ranvir and the aircraft carrier
INS Viraat.
Prior to taking over his present assignment, Joshi served as the
Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and
Nicobar Command and Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS).
A graduate of the prestigious US Naval War College and an alumnus of
Mumbai's College of Naval Warfare , and New Delhi 's National Defence
College , Vice Admiral Joshi also served as defence advisor in the
Indian High Commission in Singapore 1996-99.
He has been awarded the Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishist
Seva Medal (AVSM), Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), Nau Sena Medal (NM) and Vishist
Seva Medal (VSM).
The Vice Admiral is married to Mrs Chitra Joshi and the couple has two
daughters.
