According to a press statement issued here, Naval
Chief Admiral DK Joshi reviewed the exercise on
March 22 at the Southern Naval Command. The exercise
is conducted through February to test "diverse
factes of maritime operatins." TROPEX stands
for Theatre Level Readiness and Operational Exercise.
The exercise was conducted on India's western
seaboard, and according to the statement: "It
was aimed at assessing the operational readiness
of ships, submarines and aircraft of the Navy.
The Indian Army, Air Force and the Coast Guard
also participated in the exercise. Diverse facets
of maritime operations were exercised at sea and
bases ashore.
Significntly, more than 50 ships and submarines,
and around 75 aircraft including from the Indian
Air Force (IAF) participated. Indian Navy's Mig
29s, which are meant for INS Vikramaditya when
it arrives end 2012, were also deployed reportedly
and interfaced well with IAF aircraft.
"The Admiral had embarked ships of the combined
fleet during the exercise and witnessed the conduct
of various Fleet manoeuvres and weapon firings."
Admiral Joshi along with senior aides analysed
in detail, the conduct of TROPEX.
Key issues which emerged post the review would
be factored into operational doctrines by the
Navy. Commander in Chiefs of all the three Naval
Commands - the other two being Western Naval Command
and Eastern Naval Command - were also present
along with other top officials.
The Chief of Naval Staff was received by Vice
Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in
Chief, Southern Naval Command.
