This is the first ever visit by an Indian Coast Guard ship to Macassar as part of bilateral efforts to promote goodwill, and is aimed at enhancing cooperation with the Maritime Law Enforcement Agencies of Indonesia including BAKAMLA and BASARNAS.
According to an ICG spokesman, the visit is indicative of the expanding maritime security relationship between the two nations, and envisions common interest of the respective agencies in combating maritime transnational crime, Maritime Search & Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, Exclusive Economic Zone Surveillance, Humanitarian Aid & Disaster Relief and Maritime Pollution Response.
ICGS Samrat has been designed and built indigenously by M/s Goa Shipyard Limited, Goa, India and was commissioned on January 21, 2009, and is a testimony of India’s ship building capabilities.
It is equipped with advanced and sophisticated navigational and communication sensors and equipment. The special features of the ship include an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS), External Fire Fighting System, Deluge system and two indigenously built medium range 30 mm Gun Mounts with remote control firing provisions.
The 105 m long vessel is also capable of carrying a helicopter and is presently being manned by about 20 Officers and 120 Enrolled Personnel.
ICGS Samrat is based at Mumbai and is currently commanded by Deputy Inspector General SK Bharatriya, TM.
