August 28. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit New York next month to attend the United Nations’ Summit of the Future on September 22–23, which will host several global leaders. The Prime Minister is also slated to address the UN General Assembly High-Level Week that begins with ‘Summit of the Future’ during his visit.
This year, the high-level general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly is slated to be held from September 24–30. As per the provisional list of speakers issued by the UN, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s “Head of Government,” will address the session on September 26.
According to the provisional list of speakers, India’s Prime Minister is expected to address the session on the afternoon of September 26. Modi, who was sworn in for a historic third term as India’s Prime Minister in June, last spoke at the annual high-level UNGA session in September 2021. In June of the previous year, he led the historic Yoga Day commemoration at the UN headquarters before travelling to Washington, D.C., for a State Visit hosted by President Joe Biden.
During the high-level week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the start of the General Debate.
Guterres will also host the Summit of the Future at UN Headquarters on September 20-21, with the Summit itself scheduled for September 22-23. World leaders will gather at the UN to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes.
“The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future,” the UN was quoted in its report.
This will be an important visit after PM Modi’s recent visits to Russia and Ukraine. Earlier, the White House praised PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine, saying that they believed it would be helpful in trying to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
A big Indian community event by PM Modi in New York is also scheduled to be held on September 22. Over 24,000 members of the Indian diaspora have already signed up to attend the event according to sources.
The event’s theme is ‘Modi & US’ Progress Together’, which will be conducted on September 22 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which has a capacity of 15,000.
On Monday, August 26, PM Modi received a phone call from President Joe Biden and discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict, among others.
After the telephonic conversation, Biden praised PM Modi for his “message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support” for Ukraine and vowed to work to strengthen Indo-Pacific ties.
